What is Bhagavad Geeta?

The Bhagavad Gita is the best known and most famous of Hindu texts, which influences our life even today. The Bhagavad Geeta is the eternal message of spiritual wisdom from ancient India.
The word “Bhagwad” means God & Gita means “song”, thus the Bhagavad-Gita is called the Song of God. 5000 years ago, in the battlefield of Kurukshetra Lord Krishna preached to Arjun, which is known as Bhagwat Geeta.

Why Shri Krishna did preach the Geeta?

When Arjun show that his own people were standing against him in the battlefield, he slipped his bow from his hand. Seeing all his relatives against him Arjun was overwhelmed with comparison.
With deep sorrow he said that my whole body shudders and my bow is slipping from my hand. I do not foresee how any good come from killing my own kinsman in this battle. Oh Krishna I do not desire the victory, Kingdom on the happiness occurring it. I do not wish to slay them even if they attack me. I can see clearly crime in killing own Kinsman. Speaking thus Arjun cast aside his bow and arrows and sank into the seat of chariot.
Seeing Arjuna losing courage Krishna preached the Gita to him. The Bhagavad Gita is a conversation between Krishna and Arjun.

Why knowledge of Gita is so important?

However the first chapter of Bhagavat Geeta is dialogue between king of Hastinapur, Dhritrashtra and his Minister Sanjay. Sanjay head Mystic abilities to see and hear events occurring in distant place.
The Gita is a spiritualism dialogue between warrior Prince Arjuna & Lord Krishna, who was serving as his charioteer at the Battle of Kurukshetra fought between Arjuna’s family the Pandavas, and those of the prince Duryodhana and his family, the Kauravas.
The Bhagavad Gita is the compilation of Arjuna’s questions and moral dilemma, Krishna’s answers and insights that elaborate on a variety of philosophical concepts.
It is a 700 verse scripture that is part of the epic, Mahabharata, written by Vyasa, which was written 4,000 years ago in Sanskrit, with the principle being the shlokas, each sholkas consisting of 8 syllables.

One of the famous sholkas is:

Yada yada hi dharmsya glanirbhavatibhaarat,
Abhyuthaanamadharmasya tadatmaanamsrja-myaham.
Paritranayasaadhu naam vinashaya-chdushkritam,
Dharam sansthaapnar-thaaya sambhavamiyugeyuge-e.

Whenever there is a decline in dharma (righteousness) and an increase in unrighteousness, O Arjuna, at that time, I shall manifest myself for the protection of the righteousness & destruction of the wicked to re-establish dharma.

In Bhagavad-Gita Lord Krishna said that whatever happens in life happens for good and there is always a cause or reason behind that. He also mentioned that we all are children of God, the one creator. God is supreme power and this world is governed by him.

The Bhagavad Gita | Main principles

  • Relationship between the Self and the Divine. Almost every chapter discusses in detail the importance of the relationship between the Self and God.
  • Path of Right Action, called karma yoga.
  • Path of Devotion.
  • 10 Lessons from Bhagavad Gita Which Teaches The Very Roots Of Our Life
  • Do your Duty/Work & Concentrate On Your Goal.
  • DO not on The Result –

You have a certain goal in mind eg you want to become a CEO of your company. The only way will be to work hard towards it, and you will eventually get to your goal. But if you day dream of What you would If you became the CEO, you are not likely to succeed.

2.     Human Life Is Full Of Battles:

It’s fears and expectations that cause restrictions and limitations. Do your best to fight every obstacle in life. Never shirk in fear & fight to the last.

3.  Identity, Recognize and Accept Equality in Life

The Ultimate Truth is to treat everyone the same, whether rich or poor, educated or not. This will teach us humility.

4. Desires Will Come To Your Mind And Go

As a human being, you are prone to getting desires. You shouldn’t let desires control your mind, as it will lead to stress & destruction. Dyrodhan did evil actions just for the sake of his desire to become King.

5. A Mind Full Of Thoughts About Money Cannot Meditate

Meditation is required to achieve “Inner Peace”. If anyone’s goal is to make money, his mind will be unstable.

6. Whatever Has Happened Is Only For The Good Future.

The Activities That Are Happening At Present Are Also For A Good Cause. The Happenings In The Future, They are also for a Good Future. It is foolish to pay attention to the past. Remember you can design a GREAT FUTURE if you concentrate on the PRESENT.

7. Change is Universal Law.

You can either become a billionaire or Pauper in a second. Even our Mother Earth is in constant rotation. She never stops. After every night day comes. Sweet rain comes only after summer. All religions consider “pride” a sign of immaturity. When you accept change as a part of life, you can handle all the tough situations in a calm manner.

8. Fear Factor is a Disability

Fear, in other words, means doubts in your ability. It will not only make you forget the goal out of fear but will make you worthless. But in case of fearless souls, the sky is the limit. Fear of the future and self-respect are the two obstacles to reach your goals.

9. You Are Born Empty-Handed, and You Will Leave This Mother Earth Empty-Handed

Are you on the path to gain more wealth? You will be taking none of the wealth or other material possessions to your grave. What will give you more peace is spiritual wealth.

10. Lust, Anger and Greed

This will lead to jealousy & restlessness & leads to self destruction. Lord Krishna elaborates that death is that moment that rips us away from everything that we hold dear, all at once, our heart, body, relations & worldly goods, but the soul never dies. For the soul there is neither birth nor death at any time. He is unborn, eternal& ever-existing.

According to lord Krishna there is only one religion, it has different dimensions. There is only one God, in whichever form you worship, it will reach the source, the Lord himself. The Gita ends with Krishna telling Arjuna he must choose the path of good or evil, as it his duty to fight against the Kauravas for his kingdom.
In that, he is correcting the balance of good and evil, fulfilling his dharma, and offering the deepest form of selfless service. You need not worry about the future, nor should you pay attention to the past. You only have control over the present, so live it to the fullest.
Hinduism is an amazing way of life, which gives us complete control of our lives, with no one judging us, except our own deeds.
